Eau de Cologne Probably the most appropriate souvenir to take home from Cologne is a bottle of eau de Cologne, first distilled from flower blossoms in the 18th century and intended as an aphrodisiac. Known here as Kölnisch Wasser, it's made by about 20 businesses, including one of the originals, Farina, which has been in operation since 1709. Stores all over the city sell it, but the Old Town is the best place to browse for gifts. An all-day market takes place Friday in Old Market Square. On spring weekends (April and May) the same square is completely taken over by hundreds of flower stalls. Wine markets set up in New Market in May and late June. Just before Lent Cologne celebrates Carnival, and all shops close during the “Crazy Days.” |
