Amalienborg Plads

The royal heart of Copenhagen is the octagonal Amalienborg Plads (Amalienborg Square), with a statue of King Frederick V at its center, rococo palaces on four sides, and broad avenues leading off the other four. The Danish royal family spends most of autumn and winter in the palaces. Their very private presence gives the square a rather detached, lifeless atmosphere except during the colorful changing of the guard, daily at noon when the Queen is in residence.

On the northwest corner of the square is the Amalienborg Palace, containing a charming collection of royal memorabilia and a sequence of reconstructed rooms that illustrate the life of the royal Glücksburg family from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries.
