Christ Church Cathedral
Dublin's great cathedral dates from the 12th century, but much of the surviving building is a 19th-century refurbishment in
Gothic Revival style. The interior has numerous fine memorials and features, but the most authentic parts of Christ Church
are the late 12th-century transepts and the ancient crypt, one of the largest medieval crypts in Europe. It is 175 feet long.
Thickets of rough stone pillars support the entire weight of the massive building above; the air is dense with age. Weird
monuments and artifacts lurk menacingly in niches and dark corners. They include battered statues of English kings, medieval
carved stones and oddities such as a mummified cat and rat, thought to have become trapped during a chase through organ pipes.
Linked to the cathedral by a covered stone bridge is Synod Hall, where the colorful exhibition “Dvblinia” details Dublin's
history from the medieval period.
