Florence and Florentines

Florentines are Tuscans - restrained and rational, and less given to fiery displays than other Italians. They also are more reserved, without the easy but superficial charm of people from other regions. Accustomed to huge numbers of visitors, they do not go out of their way to befriend tourists, but are courteous and professional in their everyday dealings.

Florence is not as instantly appealing as Rome or Venice - let it grow on you and experience it as a living city, not merely as a vast treasure house of art. Get away from the major sights and explore the quieter areas, with atmospheric streets and a wealth of traditional activities. Vary the artistic glories with a bit of hedonism, and give yourself time to relax. The best way to see Florence is on foot. Most of the main attractions are clustered together in the largely pedestrian central core, making walking easier (but watch out for ebullient scooter riders).
