Cappelle Medicee

Set behind San Lorenzo, the Cappelle Medicee (Medici Chapels) were built as the mausoleum for Florence's most powerful family. The Sagrestia Nuova, built by Michelangelo between 1520 and 1534, contains some of his most powerful sculpture. Reclining figures representing Night and Day and Dawn and Dusk decorate the tombs of Lorenzo, duke of Urbino, and Guiliano, duke of Nemours. The figures' fluid lines are a perfect foil for the austerity of the archi tecture, and are offset by the artist's lovely Madonna.
