Promenade Des Anglais

( Do not miss )

The promenade des Anglais is one of Nice's great trademarks. As its name suggests, this palm-lined promenade, which stretches along the curvaceous Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels), was constructed at the expense of Nice's wealthy English residents in 1822, so that they could stroll along the shoreline.
Originally the promenade was a simple coastal path only 2m wide. Today it is a frenetic highway of autoroute
porportions and the white wedding-cake style architecture of the luxury belle époque hotels, such as the world famous Négresco are now juxtaposed with ugly concrete apartment blocks.
The promenade des Anglais backs a 6km stretch of pebble beaches, washed by a brilliant azure sea. To the north lies a cobweb of busy pedestrianised streets, brimming with restaurants, bars and chic boutiques.
