HEALTH

MEDICAL INSURANCE
Private medical insurance is recommended. Visitors from non-E.U. countries can receive basic treatment at hospital emergency rooms. Admittance to a hospital (nosokomío) or consultation with a doctor (iatrós) will entail a fee. Ask your hotel, consulate or the tourist police for information on English-speaking doctors.

DENTAL SERVICES
Dentists (odhondoyatrós) always charge for treatment, so check that your medical insurance covers it; keep all receipts for insurance purposes. Treatment is available from English-speaking dentists listed in the telephone directory, or ask at your hotel.

SUN ADVICE
Summer, particularly July and August, can be oppressively hot and humid. Seek shelter inside a museum, or cover up, apply a sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids. Be especially careful on boats or near the water.

DRUGS
A pharmacy (farmakío), distinguished by a green cross, has staff qualified to offer medical advice and provide a wide range of prescription medicines. Information about the nearest all-night facility is usually posted at pharmacies. Note that codeine is banned and you can be fined for carrying it.

SAFE WATER
Tap water is safe to drink but because of the high level of minerals it can cause upsets. Bottled water (metaliko nero) is available everywhere at a reasonable cost.
