NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

TRAIN (tréno)
Greek trains are run by Organismos Sidirodromon Ellados (OSE), a service predominantly for the mainland. The network is limited, and a reservation is essential on most express trains. For rail information in Athens: Phone:145 (domestic services) or 147 (international services).

BUS (leoforío)
Buses are popular and frequent; few villages or ferry ports are without a bus link. Buy city-to-city tickets from the bus station; in rural areas tickets (isitirio) are issued by a conductor on the bus. For bus information in Athens: Phone:185.

FERRY (féribot)
Ferries serve all of the Greek islands, and boat excursions run from May to October. You can take a boat from the port of Piréas to most islands, but check the length of the trip on the timetable - some ferries stop at every island. You can usually buy a ticket on the day of travel unless you are reserving a cabin or taking a car. You may need to reserve in advance in mid-August and over the Easter period; ask at a travel agency or tourist office.
