Around Greenwich
The maritime heritage of Greenwich is immediately apparent even before you land at Greenwich Pier, where tall masts and rigging signpost the Cutty Sark. Launched in 1869, this is the last surviving British sailing clipper and is famous for its colourful collection of ships' figureheads. Close by is Gipsy Moth IV, the tiny craft in which Sir Francis Chichester became the first Englishman to single-handedly sail around the world in 1966-7 (closed to the public). Walk up Greenwich Church Street (pick up a map at the tourist information office) and go through the market to emerge on King William Walk. Turn right and enter Greenwich Park. Follow any of the paths that lead up to the Old Royal Observatory from where you can enjoy one of London's finest views. Continue along Blackheath Avenue. Turn left towards the bandstand, the lovely park gardens and the adjacent wilderness area where deer have been resident for centuries. Walk back downhill and exit the park near the boating pond into Park Row, then turn left into Romney Road to the entrance to the Old Royal Naval College and Chapel. This majestic baroque complex was built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1694 and 1745 as a home for Royal Naval Pensioners. They left here in 1869 and until recently the building was used as a Royal Naval College.
