Around Docklands
St Katharine's Dock marks the start of London's Docklands. The area goes to sleep at the weekends, so it is best to do this walk on a weekday. Follow St Katharine's Way along the river to Wapping High Street. The old warehouses along here which once held spices and tropical hardwoods have been converted into expensive apartments. At Wapping Pier Head some splendid Georgian houses, once the homes of wealthy wharf owners, can be seen. Beyond Waterside Gardens look at the handsome baroque Church of St George-in-the-East. If it is pub opening time (after 11:30am or 12 on Sunday) continue on to the atmospheric old Prospect of Whitby pub. From here retrace your steps a short way along Wapping Wall, turn right into Garnet Street, cross the main street known as The Highway and turn left then immediately right into Dellow Street, which leads to Shadwell Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station. Board the train for Island Gardens. You will soon enjoy great views from the high-level track down on to the incredible post-modernist developments that have taken place, and are still in progress, here in the centre of Docklands. Alight at Island Gardens. Admire the wonderful view across to Greenwich, and pick up the free map, Visiting Docklands on DLR, from the DLR information centre. Reboard the train and get off at Canary Wharf station. This is the business and leisure focal point of the new Docklands, with various places to eat, drink and shop. Take a stroll around its redeveloped docks, then either catch the DLR back to Tower Gateway or hop on the underground.
