Exploring Lyon

Most visitors use the metro system, or subway, to travel around. Although it will get you from place to place effortlessly, you'll get a better sense of the city's layout if you set out on foot, and walking can actually be quicker. The hill of Fourvière is a useful landmark; if it's on your left you're heading north, right and you're walking south. For orientation purposes remember that the Saône is the river immediately below Fourvière, while the Rhône lies on the other side of the Presqu'Ile. Lyon is remarkably hilly, especially the climb up Fourvière and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse district, so a trip to these places probably merits the short metro or bus ride. The tourist office offers an excellent one-, two- or three-day pass called the Lyon City Card. This moderately priced ticket gives you unlimited travel on the bus, trolley bus, tram and metro network, a river cruise (April through October), free admission to Lyon's best museums, a guided tour, a self-guiding audio tour of the Fourvière Basilica, access to the observatory, a lunchtime music concert, a 10 percent discount at Galeries LaFayette Lyon Part-Dieu, and a mass of literature to help make the most of your stay. The Lyonnais - with their reputation for common sense, wit and kindness - are helpful and friendly, and are usually happy to assist strangers.
