Excursion to Capri
Excursion to Capri

A favorite with the Roman emperors, Capri has been a tourist hot spot for more than 150 years. This tiny island, with its spectacular scenery and crystal-clear waters, now welcomes more than 2 million visitors annually.

Getting There
You can travel from Naples' Mergellina or Molo Beverello docks by ferry or hydrofoil, a lovely trip across the Bay of Naples that takes between 50 and 90 minutes. Spectacular views open up back to the city and across to Mount Vesuvius as you approach the steep hills of the Sorrento peninsula, with Capri lying off its tip. Boats dock at Marina Grande, the island's main harbor.

What to See
The charm of Capri lies in the combination of lovely scenery, picturesque villages and a laid-back holiday atmosphere. The two main settlements are Anacapri and Capri; their whitewashed houses and narrow, winding streets are crammed with boutiques, outdoor cafés and lively fish restaurants, and many visitors do no more than enjoy these. Most, however, take a boat trip to the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), a spectacular sea cave filled with refracted turquoise light. Another highlight is the beautiful Villa San Michele in Anacapri. Built in the late 19th century by Swedish physician Axel Munthe, this dreamlike villa is filled with classical statues. There also is a peaceful green garden, and from its shady pergola you can enjoy some of the island's loveliest views.

Walk to the ruins of Villa Jovis, Emperor Tiberius' clifftop villa, from where he allegedly threw his enemies into the sea. Or stroll to a lookout above the Faraglioni, a cluster of offshore rocks rising more than 360 feet above the water.
