Essence of Prague

It is easy to get to know Prague, even to feel at home here. To enjoy the city to the full, be prepared to abandon your sightseeing itinerary whenever the mood takes you - the galleries and museums can wait. Put away the map and wander off the beaten track. Don't neglect the side streets and courtyards, where Prague is often at its most beguiling. To see more, take the tram rather than the metro, and be prepared to go the extra mile: climb to the top of that hill - no city in Europe has more rewarding views.

The 10 Essentials

If you only have a short time to visit Prague, or would like to get a really complete picture of the city, here are the essentials:

Watch Christ and his Twelve Apostles signal the hour as they emerge from the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square.

Go to see Kafka's house in Golden Lane, in the grounds of Prague Castle.

Listen to the buskers on the Charles Bridge, while browsing the stalls for souvenirs.

Take tram 22 on its scenic journey through the Malá Strana and up to Hradčany.

Take a walk up Wenceslas Square stopping to look at Jan Myslbek's famous equestrian statue of St Wenceslas and the small shrine to the martyrs of the Communist era.

Visit U Zlatého Tygra at Jilská 4: a traditional Czech pub, where guests sit at plain wooden tables and wait to be served glasses of the frothy Pilsner Urquell lager.

See the Picassos in the Veletrzny Palace.

Listen to some Mozart - the real thing at the Estates Theatre or starring puppets at the National Marionette Theatre.

Visit the wonderful Art Nouveau confection, Obecní Dům. Built as a civic centre in the early 1900s, it has recently been completely renovated.

Enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Royal Gardens.
