Essence of Rome

Central Rome on both sides of the Tiber (Tevere) is a city of contrasts. This busy modern capital is squeezed into a maze of old streets in which the layers of more than 2,000 years of history are superimposed on each other: ancient columns embedded in Renaissance palaces, baroque façades slapped on to the front of Romanesque churches and 1930s fascist office buildings nestling among it all. Not only is Rome the seat of the Italian government (both the President and the Prime Minister have their official residences here), but it is also a world centre for the film and fashion industries.

The 10 Essentials

If you only have a short time to visit Rome, or would like to get a really complete picture of the city, here are the essentials:

Go to the Vatican and marvel at Michelangelo's masterpieces in the Sistine Chapel.

Walk the streets at the Forum where Julius Caesar trod.

At St Peter's look on the floor of the central aisle where the lengths of other cathedrals' aisles are marked - see how your local one measures up.

Do the historic centre walk to take you past some of the most famous tourist sights in the world.

Try to imagine the Colosseum full of raucous crowds with wild animals and hapless humans fighting it out in the ring.

Throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain which guarantees your return. Italian currency ends up in the coffers of the town council; foreign coins are donated to the Red Cross.

Look down on Rome from on high, and try to find the flattish dome with a hole in the middle, which is the Pantheon.

Find a bar on Piazza Navona or Campo de' Fiori, sip a drink and watch life saunter by.

See Rome by night, preferably on foot. Many of the main monuments are floodlit and those that are not have an eerie beauty in the city's soft street lighting.

Visit the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin to test your nerve with your hand in the Bocca della Verità (mouth of truth), which will bite if you tell a lie.
