Christmas
From the beginning of December until Epiphany (6 January) Rome is decorated with delicate street lighting and, on some streets,
red carpets. Piazza Navona is taken over by a massive Christmas market selling an exotic range of gaudy sweets, cheap toys
and Christmas decorations. In addition many churches have presepi (nativity scenes), often with valuable old models placed
in realistic Renaissance street scenes.
Carnevale Carnevale takes place the week before Shrove Tuesday and children dress up as cartoon or historical characters, animals and so on to walk through the streets with their parents, letting off fire crackers and throwing confetti. |
