Hollywood on the Tiber

Rome has had an active film industry since 1937 when Mussolini opened the studios at Cinecittà. The heyday of 'Hollywood on the Tiber' was in the 1950s and 1960s when many American producers and directors came here to make films such as Ben Hur, Cleopatra and, of course, the famous spaghetti westerns. Things have quietened down a bit since then but the studios are still used by Italian film and TV makers and guided tours are sometimes arranged (phone to check). Ancient Theatre

For an authentic ancient Roman theatre experience head down to the well-preserved ancient Roman theatre at Ostia Antica in July and August when the Teatro Romano produces classical Roman and Greek plays. Alternatively, at the Vatican end of the Gianicolo lies the little amphitheatre of Tasso's Oak, where ancient and less ancient classics are performed against the backdrop of wonderful views of the city.

Outdoor Music

During the summer there are plenty of outdoor classical musical events, including a series of Sunday morning concerts given by the orchestras of various branches of the armed forces on the Pincio. For a combination of world-class performers and a staggeringly beautiful setting, head to Villa Giulia which is where the Accademia di Santa Cecilia hosts its summer season. Other top-quality performers can be heard under the remains of Teatro di Marcello.

Swim, Sun, Sand

It may not be the best way to escape the crowds, but a day at the beach is a good break from sightseeing, especially during the week. Entrepreneurs sometimes limit beach access to those renting sunbeds and parasols, but this is not always the case. Bars and restaurants offer lunch. The nearest beaches are at Ostia (metro from Magliana), Fregene and Torvaianica. Further afield are Sperlonga to the south and Santa Marinella to the north.
