Neutral Territory

The Swiss Constitution, modeled on that of the United States, was drawn up in 1848 and revised in 1874; it is still in force today. Modern Switzerland is a federation of democracies (cantons), and neutrality has traditionally been the cornerstone of state policy. Switzerland has interfered in no foreign conflicts and has made no alliances, although it became a member of the United Nations in 2002.

Remaining neutral through both world wars, Switzerland emerged in 1945 as a powerful commercial player. Banking has long thrived here due to the political stability of the country and because of Swiss financial acumen. The superb infrastructure of railroads, tunnels and roads has overcome the mountainous terrain and allows the country to exploit a trading position at the center of Europe.
