Language and Manners

Reflecting Switzerland's location in central Europe, the Swiss speak four different languages: Schwyzerdütsch, a Swiss-German dialect (although German is used for reading and writing); French; Italian; and Romansch, an ancient Latin tongue. This linguistic diversity results in very different types of people, and you'll notice this as you travel.

On the whole, the Swiss are extremely law-abiding, and consider punctuality very important. Manners are formal, with hand-shaking and serious toasts in all social circumstances. Efficient, civic-minded and polite, they make Switzerland one of Europe's best run countries.
