Strasbourg and Alsace is one of the few areas in Europe that produces both notable wines and beers, and it also is home to some of the finest cooking in France. There are strong German influences here, giving the cuisine a different character from typical French fare. History has played a part in this, and it's a pleasure to see the past so clearly reflected at the table - the popular dish choucroute, for instance, is really the same thing as sauerkraut.

But don't be fooled. There's much more to the cuisine in Strasbourg than German cooking; you'll find Italian, Chinese, Lebanese, Tex-Mex, Moroccan and others. With all these options, make sure you don't overlook the opportunity to try some real Strasbourg specialties. Stop in a winstub, a small family-run restaurant often housed in an historic building, where you'll be able to sample the best of local cooking and flavors.

Alsace produces some notable wines, mainly whites, which are similar in character to the best of German wines. They are traditionally labeled with the name of the grape rather than the place of origin. Riesling, Gewürtztraminer, Pinot Blanc and Muscat are all reliable varieties to look for. Beer also is big in Alsace, the home of Heineken and Kronenbourg, two of Europe's biggest sellers. Other smaller local breweries produce excellent beer.
