Bangkok's Canals and River

( Highly Recommended )

Bangkok was built on a bend in the Maenam Chao Phraya or 'River of Kings'. It had few roads, but was criss-crossed by canals, called khlong in Thai. In Thonburi, to the west of the river, a network of canals has survived. These were - and are - active canals, now used for commerce, commuting and tourist rides on long-tail speedboats. Easily chartered at any of the numerous piers, the long-tail boats dart up narrow canals, enabling passengers to explore little-known riverside communities. Alternatively, visitors can dine in state aboard a converted rice barge as it sails past majestic Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. The regular ferry service that runs throughout the city all day is the cheapest way to explore the Chao Phraya.
