Ten miles upstream from Savannah, Port Wentworth accesses the 29,175-acre Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, an area composed largely of marshes, tidal rivers and creeks in both Georgia and South Carolina. The refuge is home to such threatened and endangered species as wood storks and manatees, as well as more common residents like ducks, wading and shorebirds, turkeys, deer and the American alligator. Bird-watching opportunities, plentiful all year, are especially rewarding in April, when birds that have wintered at the refuge are about to migrate and birds already on a migratory journey use the refuge as a stopover.
