The establishment of an army post, Fort Concho, precipitated the settlement of San Angelo. Several trails used by drovers, stage lines and pioneers intersected at the townsite, providing a setting for such historical figures as Smoky Joe, Mystic Maud, Miss Goldie and the Fighting Parson.
