DRIVE TRIP

Route 66 - Western Texas

51.3 miles: 1 hours, 22 minutes

Hot winds sweep the desert landscapes and cattle farms of Route 66, the “Mother Road,” which was established as part of the U.S. Highway System in 1926 and decommissioned in 1985. Driving the western portion of it in the Texan Panhandle can feel like a trip back in time. Art Deco cafés and retro motels promise travelers a taste of vintage Americana―Texas style.

TRIP STOPS

Farms and fields line America’s most iconic route, and small towns speak of a time when a nation passed by on the way to somewhere else. Adrian stands at the halfway point of the route―it’s 1,139 miles to either Chicago or Los Angeles. Quirky art abounds at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, where 10 cars stand half-buried, nose-down in the soil.
