DescriptionUntil 1921 the town of El Dorado was quiet and peaceful. In that year, however, oil was discovered, and the once tranquil city was transformed into a boomtown whose population increased tenfold in a 4-year span. Gamblers and moonshiners soon arrived, as did H.L. Hunt, who began his oil empire in El Dorado after winning an interest in an oil well in a poker game.
The oil business is still important, but it has been joined by timber, poultry production and chemical manufacturing to form a more diverse economic base.
