Tackling Athens

You'll probably spend most of your visit in Athens' tiny historical center. Base yourself near Syntagmatos Square or Pláka, which are only a 10- to 15-minute walk from most of the main tourist sights. Try to plan your day carefully, getting an early start, so you can lie low during the heat of the afternoon. If you need information or advice, you will find that most people connected with tourism speak English, ranging from a few words to polished and idiomatic speech.

Moving around the historic center on foot is easy, but is occasionally challenging at busy street crossings. Be aware that where there are no traffic lights local drivers rarely take note of pedestrian crossings; wait for a clear gap in traffic before crossing. City buses and trolley buses are often packed and may be delayed by traffic jams. Taxis are convenient for excursions out of the city, as is the greatly improved metro (subway) system. The main road systems into the city have also been improved. Much of this work was carried out in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games.
