The stately civic center and marketplace of ancient Athens is at the foot of the Acropolis, to which it was linked by the
Panathenaic Way. Today the site is a jumble of atmospheric, tree-shaded ruins, and you'll need to use your imagination to
visualize its glorious heyday. Dominating one end is the virtually reconstructed, fifth-century BC Doric temple known as the
Thieío. Opposite, the two-story Stoá Attálou, a second-century BC arcade, has been restored by the American School of Archeology
to give an idea of the glory of these ancient public buildings. It contains a museum with finds from the site.
