Another highlight of Australia's wilderness areas is the fascinating evidence of the long Aboriginal occupation of the continent
- an incredible era of survival in the most extreme conditions, spanning at least 50,000 years. In Kakadu National Park, for
example, you can see superb 20,000-year-old rock art sites, while far north Queensland and Central Australia contain many
other locations of indigenous cultural and artistic significance.

Although the Barossa Valley is South Australia's most famous wine area, the Clare Valley further north, the Coonawarra region
in the southeast, and McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide, also produce fine wines. Some of the best wineries in these areas are
Knappstein Wines at Clare, Penfolds at Coonawarra, and Hardy's McLaren Vale.

Western Australia's capital was originally called the Swan River Colony, after the river which flows through the city. The
river itself was named for the black swans which impressed and astonished the 17th-century explorer Willem de Vlamingh and
many early settlers. These unusual birds are still common around Perth today.
