`… a dizzying cocktail of youth, vigour, food and vibrant multiculturalism. Melbournians can turn their dexterous hands to anything.'

Victoria & Tasmania

Australia's most southerly states hold many surprises - a cooler climate (including winter snows) than many would expect, tranquil farmland, rugged peaks, and coastlines lashed by the wild waters of Bass Strait, which divides Victoria from Tasmania.

Victoria, separated from New South Wales by the country's longest river, the Murray, is small and densely populated by Australian standards. From the gracious capital, Melbourne, it is easy to reach attractions that vary from dramatic coastlines to the ski fields and peaks of the Great Dividing Range. The compact island state of Tasmania is packed with interest. Its violent convict past intrigues history lovers, while the superb coastal, mountain and wilderness scenery provides endless opportunities for outdoor activities. You can fly to Hobart and Launceston from the mainland, or take the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Melbourne.
