Perth

Founded in 1829 by free settlers, and initially known as the Swan River Colony, Perth began life as an incredibly isolated outpost of Sydney and the eastern part of the continent. This isolation continues today. Despite its prosperity and cosmopolitan ambience, Perth is the world's most remote city - separated from the east by the desert lands of the Nullarbor Plain, with the nearest large centre, Adelaide, over 2,700km away.

Much of Perth's charm is due to its location. The city is in a delightful setting on the broad Swan River; some of Australia's best urban beaches lie to the west; and the metropolitan area is backed by the low hills of the Darling Range to the east. The climate is warm and sunny, the generally rather affluent lifestyle is enviable, and the atmosphere is very relaxed for a state capital.
Perth's small and mostly modern city centre, much of which was reconstructed during the 1980s with the proceeds of the state's mineral wealth, offers quite a few attractions of its own. There are historic buildings, many parks and gardens, excellent restaurants and some good nightlife venues. But the true delights of this western capital lie a little beyond the city centre. Perth is seen at its best from the white sandy beaches of Cottesloe and Scarborough, and on cruises up the Swan River to the vineyards of the fertile Avon Valley. Another Perth highlight is the ferry trip to the atmospheric port town of Fremantle, just 19km downstream.
