Western Australia
Western Australia takes up almost a third of the continent, but is home to only 1.9 million people, the vast majority living in Perth and its port, Fremantle. Much of the terrain is arid and used for little more than cattle farming and mining. The discovery of gold in the southeast in the 1890s initially brought prosperity, and modern Western Australia has boomed because of the extraordinary wealth created by iron ore mining in particular. Natural wonders here are remarkable: tall forests in the southwest; a coastline of white sandy beaches and rugged cliffs; extraordinary wildlife, including marsupials like the numbat and quokka, unique to the state; and the dramatic rock formations of the Kimberley in the far north. Many of the glorious southern wild flowers are also found nowhere else in Australia. Although there is much to see here, remember that distances are vast - flying is the best option for getting around. |
