Crossing the Divide The best place to get a feel for the capital's character and history is at Buda. Here you will find the oldest and grandest architecture, a cluster of museums and galleries, and countless cafés and bars. You can survey the whole city from Gellert Hill (Gellért-hegy), and visit Castle Hill (Várhegy), a renovated medieval quarter reached by funicular railroad (from the Buda end of Chain Bridge). This is where you'll find the Buda Castle (Budai Vár) and the Fishermen's Fortress (Halászbástya). Pest has a much more contemporary feel; its main landmark is the Gothic parliament building (Országház) dominating the riverbank. Also worth visiting are the Hungarian State Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház) and the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum). Between the riverbanks is tranquil Margaret Island (Margit-sziget), providing a haven of gardens in the middle of the Danube. |
