Introduction

Hungary is situated at the heart of Europe. Surrounded by Austria, Slovakia, the Ukraine, Romania, Serbia/Yugoslavia, Croatia and Slovenia, it has absorbed the cultures of such peoples and conquerors as the Romans, Magyars, Turks and Habsburgs. Its majestic capital, Budapest, sits on the Danube river, which has brought trade and settlers through the country on its course from Austria to Serbia. For centuries Hungary has been a nation in flux, its territories expanding or diminishing through a series of invasions, occupations and liberations. It is today undergoing yet more change after emerging from 40 years of life behind the Iron Curtain.
