The Islands and Lapland

The mirror image of the inland water world is Finland's coastal region. Off Finland's southwestern coast is the Saaristomeri archipelago, with its thousands of islands and little rock islets known as “skerries.” Farther out lie the Åland Islands, stepping stones to Sweden. You can explore the archipelago by ferry or steamship, or stay on shore at the beaches of Yyteri, near Pori, on the coast to the north.

In northern Finland, in the great wilderness of Lapland, you can learn about the life and culture of the Sami people in Rovaniemi's Arctic Center (Arktikum). The adventurous can go white-water rafting on the Tornionjoki river, follow one of the numerous hiking routes or head into the mountains of the northwest, where Finland's highest peak, Haltitunturi, reaches 4,300 feet.
