La Belle France

La belle France - beautiful France - is indeed truly beautiful. Hexagonal in shape, each of its six sides acts as a natural boundary. The English Channel and the rolling Atlantic guard the west coasts, the Pyrenees and Alps the southwest and southeast borders, the Mediterranean laps along the southern coast and the mighty Rhine river forms a barrier against Germany in the northeast. Within this area lies a huge variety of landscape, with plains, arable flatlands, forested hills, vine- and olive-growing terraces, lush river valleys, inhospitable mountain massifs and a combined coastline stretching for almost 2,000 miles.

As you travel around France you'll notice how sparsely populated the land is compared to most other European countries. Miles go past without a sign of a town or village, yet the land is mostly cultivated, forested or tended in some way. France has always been an agricultural country, and today is the largest agricultural producer and exporter in the European Union.
