France is nominally a Catholic country, with the church separated from the state since 1905. More than 80 percent of its 60 million inhabitants have been baptized into the Catholic church, although only a small percentage regularly attend church. There are approximately one million Protestants, who for historical reasons tend to be more active churchgoers. Immigrants from France's former colonies make up a large proportion of the considerable number of Muslims, while the Jewish population in France never recovered its numbers after World War II. Every town and village has one or more churches with Sunday and daily services.
