NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

TRAIN (train)
The state rail company is the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF): Phone:08 36 35 35 35. Trains are fast, reliable and comfortable, with numerous discounts available. A “turn-up-and-go” car-carrying service from Calais (Le Shuttle) to Folkstone, England, and a Paris-London passenger train (Eurostar - call Phone:08 92 35 35 39) both run through the tunnel under the English Channel.

BUS (bus)
Bus services in cities are excellent, but rural areas may be less well served. Long-distance bus stations are usually close to railroad stations, and major train and bus services usually co-ordinate (a long-distance bus is called a car). Bus services shown on train timetables are run by the SNCF, and rail tickets are often valid for them. The Eurolines international bus network operates in France: Phone:08 92 89 90 91.

FERRY (ferry)
There are frequent traditional and fast ferry sailings to Britain from ports along the English Channel. A car-carrying train service also operates - see TRAIN above. Some Mediterranean ferries operate in summer only and may need reservations in advance.
