HEALTH

MEDICAL INSURANCE
U.S. and Canadian visitors must pay for medical treatment from a doctor or at a hospital (Krankenhaus). Keep all receipts to claim on your travel insurance. For details on emergency, weekend or English-speaking doctors, ask your hotel or consulate.

DENTAL SERVICES
A dentist (Zahnarzt) always charges for treatment. Emergency help is available from dentists listed in the local telephone directory. Check that your private medical insurance covers dental treatment.

SUN ADVICE
Germany's Continental climate brings cold, clear winters and warm summers, when sun protection is needed. Use sunscreen; children and those with fair skin should be vigilant.

DRUGS
Prescription medicines and advice can be obtained from a pharmacy (Apotheke); cosmetics and toiletries at a Drogerie. If you need medicine outside regular hours, information about the nearest 24-hour facility is posted on the door of all pharmacies.

SAFE WATER
Water is safe to drink in Germany, but you may prefer to drink bottled mineral water (Mineralwasser), which is widely available.
