USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES
German has many dialects. Language in the north descended from Old Saxon, and in the south from Old High German. Their differences were resolved by Standard German (Schriftdeutsch), created by Martin Luther when he translated the Bible in the 16th century. Germans are helpful to visitors who attempt to communicate in German, although English is widely spoken.
