DRIVING

Maximum speed limits on motor ways: 120 kph. Mimimum: 90 kph

Speed limit on all main roads: 90 kph.

Speed limit in built-up areas: 50 kph.

'Zone 30' streets: 30 kph.

Front and rear seat belts are mandatory.

Blood alcohol limit: 0.5%. Random breath tests are made regularly.

The centre of Ghent is car free! Do not be misled if you see vehicles in the historic centre - they belong to trades people or residents. If you dare to drive or park there the cost will be steep.

Vehicles parked in the wrong place are towed away without warning to a pound 20km outside Ghent. The cost of the tow truck, your transport to the pound, and the fine will come to around €200. It is thus advisable to put sufficient coins in the parking meter or (an expensive business) use an underground car park.
