NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

TRAIN
The Republic of Ireland's rail company is Iarnród Èireann (IÈ or Irish Rail). Trains are the fastest way of covering long distances and are generally reliable and comfortable, but the network is limited and one-way tickets cost almost as much as round-trip tickets. Midweek is less expensive than weekends, and there are many special offers on fares. For information: Phone:01 850 366 222; www.irishrail.ie. For Northern Ireland call Translink Phone:028 9066 6630 for rail schedules and fares; www.translink.co.uk

BUS
Bus Èireann (Irish Bus) operates a network of express bus routes serving most of the country (some run summer only). For information: Phone:01 836 6111; www.buseireann.ie. For Northern Ireland call Translink Phone:028 9066 6630 for schedules and fares.

FERRY
A car ferry runs between Ballyhack (County Wexford) and Passage East (County Waterford); Phone:051 382 480, saving 60 miles on the road trip. Another serves Killimer (County Clare) and Tarbert (County Kerry); Phone:065 905 3124. There also are ferries to several islands; ask for details at a local tourist office. There are regular ferries from Belfast, Larne, Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Cork and Rosslare to ports on the mainland of Britain, and from Cork and Rosslare to France.
