Private medical insurance is recommended. U.S. and Canadian visitors can receive emergency treatment, but are charged if admitted to a hospital (ziekenhuis). Doctors (dokter) are listed at the beginning of the telephone directory; English is widely spoken throughout the medical profession. SUN ADVICE The Netherlands' maritime climate is not one of extremes, but precautions against sunburn should be taken from June through August. DRUGS For nonprescription medicines go to a pharmacy (drogisterij). If you need prescription medicines you will have to go to an apotheek, where staff also are trained to treat minor ailments. If you need medicine outside regular hours, information about all-night facilities are posted at all pharmacies. SAFE WATER Tap water is safe to drink throughout the Netherlands.
