The Modern City

You will relax as soon as you arrive at Odense's modern railroad station, on Østre Stationsvej. Street life is busy here and the traffic is just as heavy as in any city, but directly across the road is Kongens Have, the old Royal Park. The park provides a peaceful introduction to Odense and takes you pleasantly along tree-shaded paths past the Odense Theater and the Funen Art Museum into the heart of the city. The center of Odense is at Flakhaven, a pedestrian-only area in front of the redbrick Town Hall (Rådhuset), the interior of which can be viewed on a guided tour. The friendly and helpful Odense Turist Bureau is to the left of the Town Hall.

All buses leave from central stops near the Town Hall, but you will have little need of public transportation in Odense unless you travel outside the city. Most attractions are a short walk from the center, and it is very easy to find your way around.

From Flakhaven turn left along the street Vestergade, which takes you into the pleasant, pedestrian-only heart of modern Odense. Here you will find a variety of stores, including top fashion boutiques. Visit Inspiration Zinck (Nos. 82-84 Vestergade Phone:66 12 96 93) for the best in Danish design and handicraft. Step down the adjoining street of Jernbanegade to Målet's bar and restaurant for a smørrebrød, Denmark's popular and delicious lunchtime snack, an open slice of rye bread heaped with sliced meat or fish and loaded with different garnishes.
