The Moorish Occupation
Cities, Towns and Villages

For visitors the three great cities are Madrid, Barcelona and Seville, but in Spanish eyes the industrial centers of Zaragoza and Bilbao are of equal importance, and the inhabitants of each region claim their capital as the most beautiful in Spain. Andalucia, with the architectural treasures of Granada and Córdoba, is rich in Moorish history. The region of Castille has Christian castles built during the struggle to oust the Moors.

The Mediterranean coast has many remains from centuries of Roman occupation, while the Atlantic port of Cádiz boasts 2,000 years of maritime history. Rural Spain continues largely unchanged; agriculture is more mechanized, but the way and pace of life are still deeply rooted in the past.
