Castilian is the main language in Spain, with three important regional languages: Catalan, spoken in Catalonia and Valencia; Basque, the official language of the Basque north; and Galician, spoken in the northwest. Catalan is closely related to Occitan (or Provençal), and Galician has noticeable links with Portuguese. The Basque tongue is unique, having no connection with any language in Europe.
