HEALTH

MEDICAL INSURANCE
The cost of medical treatment in Austria is high, and private medical insurance is recommended. The Austrian Medical Society can suggest a doctor (Arzt) or hospital (Krankenhaus): Lazarettgasse 13, Vienna, PHONE: 01 405 45 68. The south and east are home to Zecken - a kind of tick that can transmit encephalitis. This disease is potentially lethal, and it is essential you seek medical advice if you are bitten. An inoculation is available.

DENTAL SERVICES
Dentists (Zahnarzt) will charge for any treatment given. Dental work is expensive, so check that it is covered by your medical insurance. Dentists are listed in the telephone directory, or ask for English-speaking dentists at your embassy, a tourist office or hotel.

SUN ADVICE
Austria has strong sun during the summer months so sun protection is needed. Wear a hat, cover shoulders, drink plenty of fluids and use sunblock.

DRUGS
Pharmacies (Apotheken) can dispense prescriptions. Many assistants speak English, and a schedule displayed on the door enables you to find a late-opening or 24-hour pharmacy in every town.

SAFE WATER
Tap water is safe to drink throughout Austria. Mineral water (Mineralwasser) is widely available.
