USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES
The official language in Austria is German, although Austrians are very proud of their brand of the language (Österreichisch), and are offended if it is treated as a mere dialect of “standard” German (Hochdeutsch). On paper, the differences between the two varieties are not obvious, but the Austrian accent is distinctive, and especially strong in rural regions. There are numerous words that are peculiar to Austria and the south of Germany. The Austrian diminutive is -el or -lein compared with the German -chen, so Mädchen (girl) in German becomes Mädel in Austrian. A small number of Austrian words, such as Fauteuil (armchair) and Plafond (ceiling), are in fact of French origin.
