HEALTH Doctors The National Health Service (NHS) provides free treatment for all EU nationals and residents of countries with which the UK has a reciprocal agreement. Accident and emergency treatment is free to everyone. The 24-hour casualty department is at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, 1 Lauriston Place (Phone: 0131 536 4000). Dental Services Dental services are free only to UK citizens who fall into certain categories. For emergencies, there are two free walk-in dental clinics in Edinburgh: the Edinburgh Dental Institute, Level 7, Lauriston Building, 1 Lauriston Place (Phone: 0131 536 4913) and the Western General Hospital, Crewe Road South (Phone: 0131 537 1338). Sun Advice You are unlikely to get sunburnt in Edinburgh as there are few completely sunny days. However, sunshine is often accompanied by a good breeze and you may be unaware of the UV radiation levels of the sun in these northern latitudes; so you should still take care. Drugs Prescription and non-prescription drugs and medicine are available from chemists, often distinguished by a green cross. Some supermarkets also have a chemist's shop within the store. Chemists can advise on treatment for simple complaints. Safe Water Tap water in Edinburgh is safe and reasonably palatable; bottled water is widely available in bars, restaurants and food stores. |
