Vieux Menton & the Gardens of Garavan
Start on the promenade du Soleil outside the Musée Jean Cocteau. Follow the coast eastwards along quai Benett and promenade de la Mer past the Vieux Port (Old Port). Mornings are always busiest at the Vieux Port, with fishermen repairing their nets and a small daily fish market. Continue until Marché-U supermarket. Cross the main road (porte de France) and head up avenue St-Jacques. On the left is the Jardin Botanique, and to the right the Parc du Pian Go up some steps, then turn left along boulevard de Garavan. Continue some distance until you reach place du Cimetière at the top. Look out here for the graves of such celebrities as William Webb Ellis, inventor of rugby, illustrator Aubrey Beardsley and Rasputin's assassin, Prince Youssoupov. From place du Cimetière, go down the pedestrian rue du Vieux-Château, leaving the cemetery to your right. Zigzag down the stepped alley into place de la Conception. Here are Vieux Menton's two main churches. Cross the square and descend the 104 steps of steep, narrow rue des Ècoles Pies. Turn right at the huilerie. Head halfway down the road (towards Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs at the end) then first left down traverse rue de Bréa to rue St-Michel. Rue St-Michel is Menton's lively pedestrian thoroughfare. Turn left then cross place du Cap, leaving restaurant L'Olivo to your left. Turn immediately right under an arch along rue du Bastion back to the promenade du Soleil.
