A Walk Around St-Tropez
Start on the waterfront. Beside the tourist office, go through the porte de la Poissonnerie, past the marble slabs of the daily fish market into place aux Herbes. The colourful daily fish, fruit and vegetable stalls, just a stone's throw from the glitz and glamour of the quayside, remind visitors of St-Tropez' humble origins as a fishing village. Leave the square up the steps of rue du Marché, turn left into rue des Commerçants, first right into rue du Clocher to the Èglise de St-Tropez. Continue along rue Cdt Guichard to place de la Mairie and place Garrezio. These two squares are dominated by the handsome pink and green town hall, and the Tour de Suffren, once home of the great 18th-century Admiral Suffren. Return past the town hall and along rue de la Ponche. The 15th-century Porche de la Ponche archway leads to the old Ponche quarter. This is the old fishing district of St-Tropez, centred on the sun-baked place du Révelin, overlooking the unspoilt fishing port and tiny pebble beach. Head up rue des Ramparts, turn right at rue d'Aumale to the delightful place de l'Ormeau, and left up rue de l'Ormeau to rue de la Citadelle. Turn downhill towards the port, then take the first left into rue Portail du Neuf and turn right at rue Miséricorde. The Chapelle de la Miséricorde with its quaint bell-tower dates from the 17th century and the road alongside passes through its flying buttresses. The chapel's entrance is on rue Gambetta. Continue along rue Gambetta for lunch at place des Lices.
