Hungarian Heritage

Hungarians have strong folk traditions and customs, especially music and dance. You can enjoy them at a dance house (táncház); there are several in Budapest. Bands usually include bagpipes and a hurdy-gurdy, and the dancing is fast and furious.

In Kiskunság National Park, between the Danube and the Tisza river, a horse-drawn buggy takes visitors to see farmsteads, long-horned cattle and curly-horned Podokan sheep. There also are displays at Hortobágy National Park - Hungary's first national park.
In the Cserhát hills of the north, the village of Hollókő sits at the foot of a 13th-century castle. The village is home to the Palóc people, who speak a distinct regional dialect and wear colorful embroidered costumes and elaborate headdresses. For another insight into Hungary's heritage, visit the famous Király thermal baths in Budapest and enjoy the luxury of a Turkish-style bath or massage.
